The countdown is over and the word is out. Atlus announced Soul Hackers 2, a new entry into the Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner sub-series, will release later this year.
The new entry will release on August 26 for PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. It features English and Japanese voiceover options. Subtitle options include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).
A noteworthy omission is the Nintendo Switch. While the original Soul Hacker first released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn in Japan, it eventually released in the West for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013.
“Soul Hackers 2 inherits the essence of Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, while evolving the game concept with a more defined art style, addictive RPG gameplay and Atlus’ next-level storytelling,” Atlus said following the reveal.
“Set in the Shin Megami Tensei universe, Soul Hackers 2 follows a brand new story about two Agents of Aion, Ringo and Figure, and their fight to stop the destruction of the world.”

The reveal comes after Atlus launched a website with a countdown clock back on February 17. The website featured the name “soul-hackers” with no other information. A Twitter account also was found coinciding with the mysterious website. It posted various cryptic tweets leading up to the eventual reveal.
Some noticeable changes in the trailer from the original is the game now features a third person perspective. Soul Hacker played from a first person perspective in the dungeon crawler. The new entry also sees you fight with other humans by your side. The original let the player use a maximum of two humans with up to four demons in combat.
The English version of the site currently doesn’t have many details. However, news outlet Gematsu translated the Japanese site to give much more information to those interested.
Those wanting to play the original would be best served buying the game digitally. Physical versions of the game are fairly expensive while you can grab it digitally for $20. You better do it soon though, Nintendo recently announced it will close the WiiU and 3DS eShop in March 2023.
